State of Decay - Improving Oral Health in Georgia’s Aging Population

May 21, 2014

Originally from Long Island, Carol Smith new from an early age that she wanted to work in the field of dentistry and oral hygiene.  She attended the State University of Long Island, and moved to Atlanta in 1970 (making her an honorary native!)  She went on to earn her Masters degree from Georgia State University.   Today she is the Program Director for the Oral Health Prevention Maternal & Child Health Program for the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Joining Carol this morning is Pam Cushenan, CEO of Soft Smiles, LLC.  Pam also knew from an early age that she wanted to be in the oral health field.  She was trained at the age of 17 to be a dental hygienist, became a dental specialist in the Air Force, and went on to earn a degree in Oral Health from Tenesee State University.  She has a knack for teaching people about oral hygiene, so she turned that knack into a business with Soft Smiles.

Listen in as Carol and Pam discuss oral hygiene, its impact on overall health, and how taking care of your teeth can help you live longer!  For more information about the Georgia Oral Health Coalition, click here!  To reach Pam, you can email her at  To reach Carol, email her at
